Former Metropolitans
 

1. Most Rev. Dr. Leonard Mellano of St. Louis, O.C.D., Archbishop of Nicomedia and Vic. Ap. of Verapoly was consecrated on 15th of November 1868 at Verapoly. He became Metropolitan of the Archdiocese of Verapoly, on 1st of September 1886, and died on 19th of August 1897 at Verapoly.

2. Most Rev. Dr. Bernard of Jesus Argiunzons O.C.D., nominated Titular Archbishop of Philippi and Co-adjutor “cum jure successionis” to the Archbishop of Verapoly on 14th of January 1896 was consecrated on August 9th of the same year, and succeeded on 19th of August 1897. In consequence of the failing health he resigned his See in 1919, and was appointed Titular Archbishop of Larissa, and returned to the Monastery of Mount Carmel (Palestine). He died in “Las Palms”, Spain in 1933.

3. Most Rev. Dr. Angel Mary Perez Cecelia, O.C.D., nominated Archbishop of Ochrida and Co adjutor with the right of succession to the Archbishop of Verapoly on 18th of June 1915 was consecrated at Ernakulam on 20th of October 1915 by the Bishop of Quilon. He succeeded to the See of Verapoly on 6th February 1919 and was enthroned on 28th of April 1919. He resigned for reasons of health on 15th of November 1934 and returned to Spain and died in Burgos, Spain on 14th of June 1944.

4. Most Rev. Joseph Attipetty, Ph.D., S.T.D., LL.D nominated Titular Archbishop of Gabulla and Co-adjutor to Archbishop Angel Mary on 29th of November, 1932, was consecrated in Rome by H.H. Pope Pius XI on 11th of June, 1933. Dr. Joseph Attipetty assumed the reigns of administration on 21st of December 1934 after the resignation of Dr. Angel Mary. His Pallium Investiture took place on 25th of July 1935. He died in Lourdes Hospital, Ernakulam, on 21st of January 1970.

5. Most Rev. Joseph Kelanthara, D.D. LL.D., J.C.D., S. Sc., D.M.A., M.Ed., nominated Archbishop of Verapoly on January 16, 1971, was ordained Bishop by the Most Rev. Dr. Simon Lourdsamy, then Joint Secretary to the Congregation of the Propagation of Faith on April 4. 1971, became Ordinary on April 8, 1971. Pallium Investiture took place on October 29, 1973. He died on October 19, 1986.

6. Rt. Rev. Bishop Antony Thannikot, Ph. L, S.T.D. was nominated Titular Bishop of Tigillava and Auxiliary to the Archbishop of Verapoly on December 19, 1978. He was ordained Bishop by His Grace the Most Rev. Dr. Joseph Kelanthara, Archbishop of Verapoly on March 11, 1978. He died in Lourdes Hospital, Ernakulam on February 24, 1984.
