His Excellency Rt. Rev. Dr. Joseph Karikkassery-
New Bishop of Kottapuram
His Holiness Pope Benedict XVI appointed Rt. Rev. Dr. Joseph Karikkassery, the Auxiliary Bishop of Verapoly, the Bishop of Kottapuram.
The appointment was made public in Rome on Saturday, December 18, 2010 at noon and the same was solemnly announced at the Headquarters of Verapoly and Kottapuram too at the corresponding Indian Standard Time.
Msgr. Karikkassery hails from Karthedom, a traditional parish in the island of Vypin.
On May 31st, 1960 he joined the Minor Seminary at Ernakulam. Later, having completed the philosophical studies of three years at St. Joseph’s Pontifical Seminary, Carmelgiri, Aluva, he started with theological studies at Mangalapuzha.
On December 19, 1973 he was ordained priest.
He served as assistant parish priest at Kottapuram and at Our Lady of Fatima Church, Elamkulam for three years and five years respectively.
Then he was appointed the director of Holy Angel Institute, Kalamassery.
He rendered his service as parish priest of Perumanoor, Palarivattom, Chathiyath, Cheranellor and Kuttikattukara.
He has been also Vice Rector of St. Joseph Pontifical Seminary, Carmelgiri, where he completed his philosophical studies.
In March 2002 he was made the Rector of the Minor Seminary, Kalamassery.
On February 1, 2006 he assumed the office of the Vicar General of Archdiocese of Verapoly.
He was nominated the Auxiliary bishop of Archdiocese of Verapoly and titular bishop of Buxentum (Capo della Foresta) by His Holiness Pope Benedict XVI on November 25th, 2006.
The Episcopal ordination took place at National Shrine – Basilica of Our Lady of Vallarpadam on December 28, 2006.
He assumed the office of the Archdiocesan Administrator on October 26, 2009 at the demise of Archbishop Dr. Daniel Acharuparambil and served in this capacity till April 11, 2010 on which Most Rev. Dr. Francis Kallarakal, the then Bishop of Kottapuram, was installed the Archbishop of Verapoly. We wish him every good and God’s blessings.
Annual Pilgrimage & Conclusion of the Year of Priest
The Annual Marian Pilgrimage to National Shrine Basilica of Our Lady of Vallarpadam and the conculsion of the Year of Priest take place on September 12, 2010. The pilgrimage begins from St. Francis Assisi Cathedral and the Vallarpadam Junction at 3.00 pm and 3.30 pm respectively. The pilgrims will be received at the entrance gate of the National Shrine Basilica by the Rector Fr. Thomas Pulikal. The Pontifical Eucharistic Celebration by the Most Rev. Dr. Francis Kallarakal, the Metropolitan Archbishop of Verapoly, along with the priest of his Archdiocese will take place at 4. 30 pm at Vallarpadam Rosary Park . During this solemn Eucharistic Celebration the parents of the priests will be honoured and all the faithful will be dedicated to the protection of Our Lady of Vallarpadam. The liturgical celebration wil be followed by a devotional-hymn-Kachery being organised by Fr. Joseph Thattarassery and team.

The Most Rev. Dr. Francis Kallarackal - The New Archbishop of Verapoly
His Holiness Pope Benedict XVI appointed Most Rev. Dr. Francis Kallarackal the new Archbishop of Verapoly. The appointment was made known on February 20, 2010 at 4. 30 pm Indian Standard Time in the Archdiocese of Verapoly, in the diocese of Kottapuram as well as in Rome. Dr. Francis Kallarackal is the first bishop of Kottapuram and has been heading the diocese since 1987.
Born to Kallarackal Ouso and Brigitte of Kottapuram on October 10, 1941, he joined the St. Joseph's Minor Seminary in 1956. After completing pre-degree course from St. Albert's College, Ernakulam, he joined St. Joseph's Pontifical Seminary, Carmelgiri, Aluva, for pursuing studies in philosophy. He completed his theology course from Propaganda College, Rome and was ordained priest on June 29, 1968. He holds a Licentiate in Sacred Theology from Pontifical Urbaniana University, Rome and post graduation from Fairfiled University, USA. When he returned from abroad in 1970, he was appointed secretary to the then Archbishop Joseph Kelanthara.
From 1978 to 1986, he served as the social action director of the Archdiocese. He was then appointed the adminstrator of St. John's Medical College, Bangalore, which is established and managed by the Catholic Bishops' Conference of India. In 1987, as the Diocese of Kottapuram was created through the bifurcation of the Archdiocese of Verapoly, he became the first bishop of Kottapuram.
Archbishop-elect Dr. Kallarackal is presently serving as vice-chairman of the Media Commission of the Kerala Catholic Bishops' Council, chairman of the Carmelgiri Pontifical Seminary Episcopal Commission and the Church's publication "Jeevanadam".
